When we see them as connected, we feel more whole, and that’s what love is about for many of us anyway. Seeing ourselves in the past is as much about being certain of our present and, dare I say, our future. What do images of men in love during a time when it was illegal tell us? What are we looking for in the faces of these people who dared to challenge the mores of their time to seek solace together? Flipping through the book, it wasn’t that I felt that I learned a great deal about being LGBTQ, but what gave me comfort was the feeling that we’re not going anywhere. While the majority of the images hail from the United States and are of predominantly white men, there are images from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Japan, Latvia, and the United Kingdom among the cache. The collection belongs to Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell, a married couple who has accumulated over 2,800 photographs of “men in love” during the course of two decades. In Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s–1950s, hundreds of images tell the story of love and affection between men, with some clearly in love and others hinting at more than just friendship.

It is also implied that there was a struggle between the two as multiple rounds were found on Mark's bed.įollowing Mark's investigation, MCPD put up "Alternate Report" posters for Cesar Torres.Postcard, circa 1910, 90 x 141 mm, note on front: “E. Cesar's alternate picks up Mark's camcorder and stares into it.Ĭesar is discovered to have been the perpetrator involved in Mark's suicide as his fingerprints were discovered on the doorknob. When Mark opens the door after 2 days, the alternate Cesar can be heard laughing maniacally before Mark screams "YOU FUCKING BASTARD!!" and shoots himself in the head. Mark attempted to call Cesar, telling him that an alternate followed him home, not knowing "Cesar" was the alternate that followed him home. Cesar's face is seen contorting beyond recognition, confirming that he was replaced and the alternate attacked Cesar's mother.
Mark agrees and Cesar hangs up, claiming to be near the hospital.Īfter Mark finishes turning on the cameras and returns home, we are shown security camera footage from earlier that same day where Cesar's mother shouts "Who are you!? Get away from me!!" then screams. Mark complies, but before hanging up, Cesar specifically asks if Mark can get a look at the back hallway, when he does the video feed glitches out and his portrait darkens with a large, eerie smile now plastered across his face. Being out, Cesar asks Mark if he can go to his house and turn on their security cameras, which they had installed after being robbed. Cesar claims he heard his mother screaming and found her collapsed, then immediately rushed to the Emergency Room before calling Mark. Not much is known about Cesar himself as he has been replaced by the time we meet him.Ĭesar Torres is first seen when calling Mark, labeled Victim Two. Being an alternate when we meet him, it is very likely the original Cesar is dead. Cesar Torres is an 18 year-old, fair-skinned young man with mid-length black hair, seen wearing a black suit with a red bowtie, white undershirt, and a rose attached to the left pec.
